“We urge Ward Councillor [Moosa] Raise to treat Witsand with the same level of priority as other areas,” residents of Witsand demanded in a memorandum handed to him. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Residents from Witsand marched to the offices from Sub Council 1 on Tuesday 25 February. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to Moses Matiso, SANCO (South African National Civic Organisation) chairperson, these demands were long overdue. Listed are, among other things, the installation of high-mast lighting in designated areas, as previously agreed on with Raise. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
“We urgently demand that attention be given to the Covid informal settlements, where promises made by City departments four months ago remain unfulfilled. We request immediate provision of essential services.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
These include: \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u2022 Electricity \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u2022 Access to clean water \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u2022 Proper sanitation facilities: The current potty toilet system is grossly inadequate, and the lack of water for washing has created unacceptable and unsanitary living conditions. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u2022 Mobile police station\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u2022 Demand for a high school, a proper primary-school infrastructure, a clinic, proper sanitation management\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u2022 The current state of our roads, worsened by wet and damaged conditions, forces urgent action.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
More specifically, they request: \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u2022 Installation of speed humps on Chris Hani Road \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u2022 Enforcement of speed limits \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u2022 Repair of potholes on all Witsand streets. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“We expect prompt action to address these concerns and ensure the safety and well-being of Witsand residents,” Matiso said.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He said residents further demanded the “immediate establishment of a library in Witsand to provide our community with vital access to educational resources. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“A library is essential for promoting literacy, supporting the educational development of our children and fostering a culture of learning. The absence of a library in Witsand has left a significant gap in our community’s educational infrastructure. We urge the relevant authorities to prioritise this critical need and provide a well-resourced library that will benefit our children and the broader community, parks and sports field.” \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Matiso highlighted the social conditions and challenges faced by the community, emphasising the need for tangible actions, not just promises. “We, the community, have gathered here to demand action, not promises he told the Councillors and officials. The community’s demands are clear, and we expect Councillor Raise and Subcouncil 1 to deliver essential services, and not empty promises. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Ward 32 councillor Moosa Raise is responsible for ensuring the community receives adequate services, including infrastructure development, health care and social services. We will no longer accept being ignored,” he said. “We urge Subcouncil 1 office and Ward 32 councillor Raise to take urgent action to address our demands.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“In 2018, the community of Witsand, under the leadership of former chairperson Maseti, marched against poor service delivery and handed a memorandum with the same demands to Subcouncil Manager Wessie van der Westhuizen.” \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Matiso said none of the demands had been delivered then and the community felt neglected, disrespected and undervalued by Subcouncil 1 and Ward 32 Councillor Raise. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“We are tired of meetings and promises without action. The following demands were listed: schools, clinic, taxi rank, halls, police station, play parks, sports fields, high mast lights, library, electricity, and houses. Regrettably, you have failed to address these demands…We demand immediate action to address these long-standing concerns.” \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Subcouncil 1 Chairperson Cllr Allister Lightburn said the memorandum handed to Raise would be sent on to the City’s Public Participation Unit, which will then send it to its line departments and also provincial and national government departments that were mentioned in the memorandum and will get written responses that will then be communicated to the stakeholders that initiated the March.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
