Thousands of Western Cape parents applying for Grade R, 1 and 8 placements for next year will learn the outcome of their children’s school applications on Thursday 28 May.

The Western Cape Department of Education are urging families not to panic if they do not receive an immediate offer.

Provincial education minister, David Maynier said schools determine the outcome of admissions applications based on their admissions policies and not the department.

“At the point when outcomes are first released, a substantial number of learners will have received offers from more than one school. For example, last year, over 40 000 learners had multiple successful outcomes at various schools and were initially “double parked” on the system.”

He said that with thousands of learners holding multiple offers, the admissions process will continue to shift significantly in the weeks ahead as spaces open up across schools, with notable movement expected well beyond the initial release of results.

Maynier reminded parents that the deadline to confirm a school placement is Monday 15 June.

He said many learners who are not placed immediately are later accommodated as spaces become available, with schools contacting parents directly when new openings arise.

Actions for parents:

  • If you have received multiple offers, please accept one school as soon as possible. This helps free up places for other learners.
  • If your child has not yet been placed, remain engaged with the schools you applied to and ensure your contact details are correct.
  • Be assured that the admission process is still active, and many placements will still be finalised.

Maynier urged parents to remain patient as the admissions process continues, saying the department is closely monitoring placements and remains committed to ensuring every learner is accommodated.

Maynier added that further communication and support will be provided to families throughout the remainder of the admissions process.
