Bird and wildlife enthusiasts can look forward to an opportunity to get to know the feathered residents of the Free State from up close. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

At an event hosted at the Oliewenhuis Art Museum next month, Dawie de Swardt, head of the Ornithology department at the National Museum in Bloemfontein, will lead a bird-ringing demonstration. Organised as part of the annual BirdLife South Africa Bird of the Year celebrations, this provides a unique opportunity to witness bird ringing in action and learn more about birds, birding and conservation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Those interested in attending can make a note to reserve the morning of 10 May, from 07:00 to 11:00, for this. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Ornithology department has hosted a bird-ringing demonstration at Oliewenhuis Art Museum every May for several years. Bird-ringing at the koppie area of Oliewenhuis began in 1988, making it a long-established and ideal location for both ringing birds and providing training for prospective bird ringers. The site also serves as a venue to gather valuable data through the recapture of earlier ringed birds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This demonstration will offer visitors insight into the bird-ringing process, showcasing the techniques used to track and study bird populations. The event is open to the public, and no prior experience is needed to attend.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

The event will also highlight the 2025 Bird of the Year, the Red-billed Oxpecker (Buphagus erythrorhynchus<\/em>). Known locally as the “rooibekrenostervo\u00ebl” in Afrikaans, “Ihlalankomo” in Zulu, and “Ihlalanyathi” in Xhosa, these birds are commonly linked to large herbivores such as buffalo, rhinoceros and cattle. They feed on ticks and other parasites found on these animals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Admission to the event is free of charge. Secure parking is available at R10 per car, payable in cash only.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
