The Nexus Primary School secured a victory during the International Math Community Alliance (Timca) Math Challenge that was held in Harrismith. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The first-ever Timca Math Challenge took place on 13 April, in the Intabazwe Multipurpose Hall in Harrismith in front of a rowdy and supportive crowd. Here, the Math skills of 200 learners of ten primary schools in Intabazwe and Tshiame areas were tested.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In a very tight race between three teams, it was Nexus who was the overall winners with the Qhubeka Primary School in second place and the Vulindlela Primary in the third place. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIn the Timca Mathematics Challenge, every learner is a winner. They all worked very hard to improve their Math skills, a much-needed skillset in South Africa. They may not have all won a trophy, but they all demonstrated skills they developed in our after-school Maths programmes,\u201d says Colin Beck, director of the Timca organisation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Teams, made up of 20 children, each faced 90 questions. For every five correct answers, they received a ball which they raced to place in clear tubes in the middle of the hall. The team that placed 18 balls first was crowned as the winner. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Timca focuses on building competency in Mathematics and workplace skills in children and unemployed youth. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
