Concerns have been raised by residents of the Moqhaka municipality regarding the neglect of stormwater drains and manholes, as well as the danger they pose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Moqhaka is set to lodge a formal complaint with the municipal council regarding the alarming state of stormwater drains and manholes in the municipality. They argue that inadequate maintenance has left residents vulnerable to flooding, health hazards, and unsafe infrastructure, particularly during the rainy season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Recent surveys and site visits conducted by the DA revealed critical neglect of essential stormwater management systems. Open manholes have become makeshift shelters for homeless individuals, creating safety risks for pedestrians and animals alike, especially after dark. Concurrently, blocked stormwater drains have led to localised flooding, leaving roads compromised and increasing the municipality’s maintenance costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Stagnant water in these drains poses a significant public health risk, breeding mosquitoes and potentially spreading waterborne diseases,” says Cllr. Linda Louwrens, DA Councillor of the Moqhaka Municipality. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Despite numerous reports, there’s no budget allocated for the maintenance of these crucial infrastructures.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Louwrens says the DA complaints come on the heels of alarming findings: many stormwater drains remain clogged with refuse and debris, whilst some have not been cleaned in years. Overflowing sewage from unmaintained systems is also a growing concern, with harmful pathogens posing threats to community health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The DA is advocating for immediate and comprehensive solutions, which include regular inspections, improved waste disposal education, and community involvement in reporting issues. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Proposed measures also call for the installation of covers over open manholes and the introduction of advanced stormwater management systems such as catch basins and green infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As Moqhaka residents await a response from the municipality, the DA’s proposals present a pathway to rectify the ongoing neglect and safeguard against future flooding and health hazards. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
