The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Dihlabeng has made alarm over the deplorable state of sidewalks in Bethlehem, which poses a threat to residents’ safety. The DA has filed a formal complaint against the Dihlabeng municipality, citing the appalling condition of sidewalks as clear evidence of mismanagement and blatant disregard for pedestrian safety and well-being.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Pedestrians in Bethlehem are forced to navigate busy roads while dodging rocks, overgrown vegetation, and other obstacles, all while trying to avoid oncoming traffic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The absence of functional sidewalks has created what the DA describes as a disturbing pattern of prioritising development over resident needs. A pedestrian path connecting Jordania and Panorama was demolished to make way for a hardware store, forcing students and commuters to risk their lives crossing a busy intersection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Meanwhile, a multimillion-rand pedestrian bridge in Bohlokong stands idle \u2013 a symbol of the municipality’s mismanagement and lack of foresight. This has sparked outrage and raised serious questions about resource allocation and whether the local government is truly committed to creating a safe and livable environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“This ‘white elephant’ is a stark reminder that the municipality’s priorities are misplaced, with residents’ safety and well-being taking a backseat to projects that fail to deliver,” says Estie Senekal, DA Councillor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The situation has prompted widespread concern among residents, with many questioning the municipality’s commitment to creating a safe environment. The DA has pledged to continue advocating for pedestrian safety and holding the municipality accountable for its failures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
