Stephen Thakeng, media liaison officer for the Lejweleputswa police, says men are also abused but in most cases women, children, and the elderly are more than likely to experience violent acts committed against them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThroughout the district of Lejweleputswa, police members of partnership policing continue to conduct awareness campaigns regarding domestic violence and GBV. Pamphlets containing information how to protect oneself against criminal acts are distributed weekly in every policing station precincts,\u201d says Thakeng.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Some of the preventative measures to avoid becoming a victim include: if you are in immediate danger or seriously hurt, contact the nearest police station for urgent assistance. We encourage victims of any crime to register a case.) Elderly people must never be allowed to stay alone in their homes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>School learners are encouraged to open up and tell their educators about any act of abuse taking place at their respective homes, who will then engage with the local police through Adopt-A-Cop programme for further handling.) Neighbours and family members must not look away when they know there is abuse and domestic violence taking place. Report these cases to the police anonymously.) Tell someone you trust when you are going through an abusive relationship or experiencing domestic violence as it might escalate to femicide.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span>Forms of violence or abuse to be aware of:<\/span> <span>)<\/span> physical violence,<span>)<\/span> sexual violence,<span>)<\/span> psychological violence, and<span>)<\/span> economic violence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2013 Domestic violence does not see gender. A toxic and insecure partner will exert violence, irrespective of their gender.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2013 Educational training can help stop domestic violence, and teach about the violation of both women\u2019s and men\u2019s rights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2013 Observance to the law: even if you are the head of the family, that does not necessarily grant a license for domestic violence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In conclusion, avoid bad company. Sociologists often tell us that peer pressure is a strong influence on both young people and adults.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit comprises of men and women in blue who are committed and dedicated to ensure that thorough investigations are conducted which mostly lead to the successful convictions to perpetrators of these horrible crimes,\u201d says Thakeng.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In a recent case, a 46-year-old man residing in Bronville was sentenced to life imprisonment for raping his 13-year-old step daughter. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In another case in Meloding, a 38-year-old man, who was on parole for house robbery and rape, was arrested for these same crimes after assaulting a 9-year-old boy during load shedding. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe suspect is currently awaiting trial, and a thorough investigation is being conducted to ensure that he will face the full might of the law,\u201d says Thakeng.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lejweleputswa district police, under the leadership of the acting district commissioner, Brig. Mzondi Mojafi, will continue to protect and serve residents professionally.
