One of Welkom\u2019s young and upcoming athletes, Tyla Wasmuth, received a bronze medal for discus at the Athletics South Africa (ASA) Championships on 25 March.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Tyla is currently ranked eighth in the world for U17 girls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Her father, Wassie Wasmuth, says his daughter believes in working hard. \u201cThe right things will come at the right time,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Her strength and her motto in life is based on Psalm 143 verse 8: \u201cShow me the path I should walk for I entrust my life to You.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Tyla started the athletics season with house sports at the Goudveld-Ho\u00ebrskool, where she broke the discus record, and ranked first in the top ten.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
After this she went on to attain first position for shotput and discus at numerous events. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
At the Lejweleputswa District athletics meeting on 14 February, Tyla continued her winning streak and was number one on the top 50 ranking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Following this, she placed first twice at the Multi-Green athletics meeting in Sasol on 22 February where she accepted the trophy for best female athlete.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then, at the Free State event on 3 March Tyla set a discus record with a distance of 46,27 m, and finished first for both discus and shotput.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At the ASA championship in Pietermaritzburg, she won a bronze medal for discus and was ranked eighth globally for girls U17. At the SA School Championships in Germiston on 4 April she placed fifth in discus and ninth in shotput.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
