The temporary suspension of the Phakisa Freeway\u2019s license by Motorsport South Africa (MSA) has come as a big blow to the Goldfields\u2019 economy, and has also scuttled tourism plans for the freeway. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Thanduxolo Khalipha, executive mayor of Matjhabeng, recently announced big plans for Phakisa during an economic summit that was held in Welkom. He announced that it would form the nucleus of an economic hub. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
With the cancellation of the license, the Goldfields has lost two major races: the two-day Track Daze for motorbikes, which attracts riders from all over South Africa, as well as the GT Supercup. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
These races were on this year\u2019s MSA calendar and guest house accommodation was already booked and paid for. Payments had to be refunded. The maintenance of the track was a major influence in the decision to suspend the license. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
An informed source near to the debacle says there is no budget for maintenance and the track needs to be resurfaced, which will cost R12 million. Phakisa is an act of parliament and falls under tourism, gambling, and liquor regulations. These departments have no budget for maintenance.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
