{"id":49870,"date":"2024-02-08T11:52:18","date_gmt":"2024-02-08T09:52:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/vistanews\/renowned-businesswoman-sentenced-20240208-3\/"},"modified":"2025-03-21T09:54:45","modified_gmt":"2025-03-21T07:54:45","slug":"renowned-businesswoman-sentenced-20240208-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/vistanews\/renowned-businesswoman-sentenced-20240208-3\/","title":{"rendered":"Renowned businesswoman sentenced"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>On Friday, 2 February, company director Candida \u201cCandy\u201d Crystal Smith (46) was found guilty and sentenced by the Bloemfontein Magistrates\u2019 Court for fraud and contravention of the Tax Admin\u00adistration Act. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her sentencing follows a South African Revenue Service (SARS) investigation that revealed that she had submitted false returns for the tax period 2019 to 2020. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a result, SARS suffered a loss of about R472 701. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The case was handed over to the Hawks\u2019 Serious Commercial Crime Investigation team based in Bloemfontein, culminating in the sentencing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Smith was sentenced to a fine of R300 000 or three years\u2019 imprisonment, which is wholly suspended for five years. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She was also ordered to repay the remaining amount by 2029.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>wrote in 2020 that Welkom born and bred Candy Smith is the woman behind multiple platforms aimed at empowering young creatives in design arts in the Free State.
