Desperate pleas from a primary school in Thabong to address the hazardous conditions on a road used by their learners has seemingly fallen on deaf ears, and now a child has been critically injured.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The spot where learners cross the road is near the Goldfields FET College\u2019s Tosa campus and the old graveyard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
There is no curb so these children have to walk in the road. Large roadside bushes cause blind spots for motorists and pedestrians alike, and the large potholes cause vehicles to suddenly swerve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On Monday, 4 November, a seven-year-old Gr. 1 learner of the Daluvuyo Primary School was hit by a car as he tried to cross this treacherous road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Tebogo Modisenyane, a teacher at the school, says they have repeatedly reported this stretch of road to their councillor and the Matjhabeng Municipality, but nothing has been done.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He says the learners are constantly at risk of being hit by cars because they walk on the road. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThere are no sidewalks, and our kids are primary school learners.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Modisenyane says this situation is unbearable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIn less than two years we have had three of our learners in bad accidents on this stretch of road. One of the two who were in an accident together last year, was rushed to a hospital in Bloemfontein and admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU). He was discharged after a few weeks. Now we have another child who is in ICU fighting for his life,\u201d he says.<\/i>\n<\/i><\/p>\n\n\n\n
