Jaarliks, in Januarie en laat-April n\u00e1 afloop van die Desember- en Aprilvakansie, vind \u2019n verhoogde aanmelding van malaria-gevalle in Suid-Afrika plaas. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hoewel malaria normaalweg in die somermaande n\u00e1 re\u00ebn in malariagebiede voorkom, word di\u00e9 lewensbedreigende maar voorkombare en behandelbare siekte ook in nie-malariagebiede aangemeld.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Malaria word deur die Anopheles-wyfiemuskiet oorgedra wat met die Plasmodium-parasiet besmet is, en wanneer die besmette muskiete in voertuie en bagasie \u201csaamry\u201d, vind aanmeldings in nie-malariagebiede plaas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Malariagebiede in Suid-Afrika is veral Limpopo, en dele van KwaZulu-Natal en Mpumalanga, asook aangrensende buurlande soos Botswana en Mosambiek.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vanaf September 2022 tot Augustus 2023 is 5 813 gevalle van malaria in die land aangemeld, waarvan 1 676 in provinsies was waar di\u00e9 siekte nie normaalweg voorkom nie. Hiervan was 1 095 aanmeldings in Gauteng, 253 in die Wes-Kaap, 153 in Noordwes, 84 in die Vrystaat, 63 in die Oos-Kaap en 28 in die Noord-Kaap. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Inwoners in di\u00e9 nie-malariagebiede moet hulself daarom eerder vir malaria laat toets wanneer tipiese malaria-simptome ervaar word, al was hulle nie in \u2019n malariagebied nie. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Die woord \u201cmalaria\u201d kom uit die 18de eeu en is \u2019n samevoeging van die woorde \u201cmala aria\u201d wat \u201cbad air\u201d beteken. In di\u00e9 tydperk is geglo dat die siekte veroorsaak is deur die inaseming van die lug in moerasagtige gebiede, waar muskiete natuurlik gedy het.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Oor die w\u00eareld heen is malaria die sesde grootste oorsaak van sterftes weens oordraagbare siektes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Die W\u00eareldgesondheidsorganisasie (WGO) het bevind dat uiterste weerstoestande soos hittegolwe en oorstromings \u2019n direkte invloed op die verspreiding van malaria het.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ongeveer 96% van die 619 000 sterfgevalle per jaar wat oor die w\u00eareld heen voorkom, is in Afrika.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Waarom is malaria gevaarlik?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wanneer malaria nie behandel word nie, kan dit tot lewenslange komplikasies lei, of selfs tot sterftes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Malaria-sterftes hou gewoonlik verband met een of meer ernstige komplikasies, insluitend:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • Serebrale malaria: Parasiet-gevulde bloedselle blokkeer die klein bloedvate na die brein en veroorsaak serebrale malaria waar swelling van die brein en selfs breinskade kan voorkom. Serebrale malaria kan epileptiese toevalle of \u2019n koma veroorsaak.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Asemhalingsprobleme: Opgehoopte vloeistof in die longe (pulmon\u00eare edeem) maak dit moeilik om asem te haal.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Orgaanversaking: Malaria kan die niere of lewer beskadig of die milt laat skeur. Enige van hierdie toestande kan lewensgevaarlik wees.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Bloedarmoede: Malaria kan daartoe lei dat daar nie genoeg rooibloedselle is vir \u2019n voldoende toevoer van suurstof na die liggaam se weefsels nie.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Lae bloedsuiker: Ernstige vorme van malaria kan baie lae bloedsuiker veroorsaak. Kinien, \u2019n algemene medikasie wat gebruik word om malaria te behandel, kan ook tot lae bloedsuiker lei. Baie lae bloedsuiker kan tot \u2019n koma of die dood lei.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    Sekere soorte malaria keer terug met \u2019n \u201crelapse\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Simptome van malaria<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Besoekers aan malariagebiede wat binne sewe tot 21 dae n\u00e1 \u2019n malariagebied besoek is, simptome soos kopseer, koors, diarree, koue rillings, en spier- en gewrigspyn ontwikkel, moet \u2019n dokter of kliniek besoek om deur middel van \u2019n bloedtoets vir malaria getoets te word.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Ook persone wat nie \u2019n malariagebied besoek het nie, en bogenoemde simptome ondervind, moet hulself eerder vir malaria laat toets. Omdat baie van die simptome met di\u00e9 van verkoue of griep ooreenstem, dink mense in baie gevalle dat dit net \u2019n \u201csomerverkoue\u201d is wat sal verbygaan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Indien di\u00e9 toets positief is, moet behandeling dadelik begin word. Een van die faktore wat tot sterftes weens malaria bydra, is dat die behandeling te laat begin word. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Medikasie wat mondelings ingeneem word, is geskik vir ligter gevalle van malaria, maar persone wat sieker is, word in \u2019n hospitaal opgeneem vir onder meer binneaarse behandeling met kinien.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Malaria is nie aansteeklik van persoon tot persoon, soos verkoue of griep nie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Voorkoming van malaria<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

    Die beste voorkoming teen malaria is om ni\u00e9 deur \u2019n muskiet gesteek te word nie, of om jou blootstelling aan di\u00e9 bloedlustige insekte tot die minimum te beperk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      \n
    • Muskiete word veral gelok deur dele van die vel waar die are redelik vlak is of die vel dun is, soos polse, enkels, die nek en die waai van die been. Trek verkieslik langpyp- en langmouklere van sononder tot sonop aan. Dit is die tyd wanneer muskiete die aktiefste is. Toe skoene met kouse help verhoed dat muskiete die enkels bykom.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Gebruik aanspuit- of aansmeermiddels om muskiete te verdryf.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Bly sover moontlik snags binnenshuis. Maak gebruik van \u2019n muskietnet in jou kamer; of van muskietbranders wat muskiete verdryf.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Wanneer jy wel in die aande buite kuier, hou die vertrek waar jy gaan slaap se vensters en deur toe, en skakel die lig af. Spuit ook insekdoder vir vlie\u00ebnde insekte. Muskietgaas voor vensters en deure is die ideaal, maar nie altyd beskikbaar nie.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Muskiete hou nie van wind nie, want hulle kan nie daarin vlieg nie. Waaiers in slaapkamers of kuiervertrekke hou muskiete uit.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Neem voorkomende medikasie teen malaria wanneer jy \u2019n malariagebied besoek. Praat met jou dokter of apteker hieroor aangesien van die voorkomende medikasie newe-effekte kan veroorsaak wanneer dit saam met sekere ander chroniese medikasie gebruik word.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Waak daarteen om byvoorbeeld oop emmers met water buite die huis of vakansiewoonplek te hou. Muskiete kan hierin uitbroei. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n
