Environmental neglect in the Matjhabeng Local Municipality has reached widespread proportions, but the situation in Allanridge, with overgrown foliage and overall dilapidation, has reached an unacceptable level.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What was once known as one of the most beautiful towns in the Goldfields, is now characterised by weeds, invasive shrubs, rodents, pests, dilapidated buildings, and spaces that provide cover for criminals.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jessica Nel, DA councillor, has demanded urgent accountability from the municipality for the prolonged absence of municipal workers from the Parks and Recreation Department in Allanridge. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The matter of the severe environmental neglect in Allanridge has been escalated. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We are demanding written explanations from the acting municipal manager and engaging with the director of Matjhabeng Parks and Recreation to initiate an urgent, large-scale clean-up intervention,” Nel said.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For years, there has been no grass cutting or tree trimming. Workers of the Community Workers Project have not been visible or effective in and around the town. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Previous excuses included the fact that Parks and Recreation workers lacked equipment, whilst tractors and cutting accessories were broken.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“These excuses no longer justify the scale of the neglect,” Nel said, adding that it was not just the neglect of overgrown foliage, but also failing sewerage infrastructure, inaccessible roads, joblessness, and the lack of business development that were adding to the community’s hardship.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The town hall was closed by the Department of Labour, and has remained so for several years, due to safety regulations. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Grass and shrubs are severely obstructing visibility at intersections and encroaching onto roads.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nel said she would arrange meetings with businesses and stakeholders to discuss practical, sustainable solutions to clean, rehabilitate, and improve the environment in Allanridge. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Allanridge ought not to be the orphan of the Matjhabeng Local Municipality, and municipal operations must be prioritised for this town. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
