Tyla Wasmuth from Welkom is part of the U20 South African University’s team that will compete at the end of July in the World University Games (WUG) in Germany.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The games will take place from 16 to 27 July in Rhine-Ruhr. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Wasmuth is one of seven athletes and staff members of the University of the Free State (UFS) who will represent South Africa at the WUG, where athletes celebrate sport, science, and culture. These games are seen as the Olympics for universities.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Wasmuth matriculated from the Goudveld-Ho\u00ebrskool in 2024 and is currently a first-year student at UFS.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In Bloemfontein she participated in various leagues of Athletics South Africa (ASA) and broke several records. Wasmuth was included in the ASA Free State team and participated in the U20 category during the SA’s.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Here she obtained a bronze medal for discus and also achieved a personal best (PB) of 50.84m. She achieves a PB of 13.01 in shot put and ended in the seventh place.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She was included in the senior Free State ASA team and participated at the SA’s in Potchefstroom in April, and also in University Sports South Africa’s (USSAS) event in May in Pretoria.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The UFS delegation includes archer Ignus de Wet and four standout athletes of athletics sporting code: Gabriella Marais, Mthi Mthimkulu, Wernich van Rensburg, and Wasmuth. Kesa Molotsane has been selected as the athletics team manager, and Marco Markgraaff will serve as head coach of the South African swimming team.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Her goal is to develop her full potential and to do what she does to glorify the Lord’s name. She still has hard work ahead of her but enjoys every moment in the circle.
