After four decades of commitment to the South African Police Service (SAPS), Brigadier Andr\u00e9 Swart is retiring, leaving behind a legacy of community service, leadership, and passion for law enforcement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Having joined SAPS in 1984, Swart’s career was deeply influenced by his upbringing. “I grew up in a home where my father was a police officer. I was a junior reservist and always wanted to serve the community,” he shared, reflecting on his early inspiration to join the force.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At just 25, Swart was appointed Station Commander of Humansdorp in what became the first of many leadership roles. He moved to Kariega (formerly Uitenhage) in January 1994, where he served with distinction for 31 years, earning the trust and respect of colleagues and community members alike. Looking back on his journey, Swart considers his promotion to Brigadier, following 26 years as a Colonel, a personal career highlight. “It was an honour to lead 248 members under my command. Their unwavering support was one of SAPS’ greatest pillars and a reflection of what teamwork can achieve,” he said.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Swart emphasised the importance of community involvement in policing. “One of the biggest challenges was to involve external role players in community policing. We fostered collaborations through bilateral meetings, and, in the end, we worked as a multidisciplinary team to serve the community,” he said. His efforts brought together Metro Police, Traffic Police, Security Companies, and Home Affairs for joint operations, which effectively reduced crime. “These weekly operations allowed us to address many issues and keep our communities safer.”\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a leader, Swart’s philosophy revolved around prioritising his team and setting a strong example. “I always considered my members the biggest pillar of SAPS, and their well-being was my top priority,” he said. “To lead, you must understand your team, be disciplined, punctual, walk in front, and never wait for tomorrow to complete a task.”\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Highlights of his career include not only operational successes but also the everyday moments of camaraderie. “Seeing smiles on the faces of my members and the community was always rewarding. Despite the challenges, the privilege of serving alongside such a brilliant team at Kariega SAPS will forever remain a highlight of my career,” he shared.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With his retirement, Swart acknowledged the mixed emotions of ending such a fulfilling chapter. “I will miss the interaction with my members and the community. It has been an honour to serve,” he said. As he transitions into retirement, Swart plans to prioritise family. “It’s time to rest and do the things I never had time for before. I’m looking forward to visiting my children and grandchildren and being part of their school activities,” he said.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He left behind a message to younger officers, urging them to exhibit discipline, faith, and patience. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Through hard work and leading by example, you will reach success,” he said. As Brigadier Andr\u00e9 Swart steps away from active duty, the Kariega community and SAPS honoured his exemplary service and celebrated a lifetime of commitment to safety and justice through a farewell recently held at the Kariega station, where many community members could not help but wish him well.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
