SOLOMON Mahlangu\u2019s Youth Citizen Action Programme (Ycap) team presented the the best Ycap programme in South Africa. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
They identified the nutrition programme at school not being effective. It was discussed with the school\u2019s meal servers and they have changed their ingredients, added more flavour to meals and changed the way of preparing the food which all made a huge difference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to Khuselwa Xuba (15), the food now looks appetizing and is far more tastier than before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cPreviously the learners would throw the food away; now they are enjoying it. There has been a huge increase in the number of learners coming to eat. It is packed and African salad is the most popular food,\u201d said Khuselwa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sibulele Solilo (16) said he is proud of the change that the Ycap team has brought through the programme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cTo me it is to bring fairness to all. I stand for supporting underdogs, those bullied in the kitchen area and who did not enjoy a meal. Now, I know that those learners do enjoy a healthy meal and do not go to bed on an empty stomach,\u201d said Sibulele.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It was Solomon Mahlangu\u2019s third time that its Ycap team reached the national finals. In 2015 they were crowned national winners with their project on eliminating late- coming at school and in 2016 they came third presenting their project on poverty affecting education and encouraging parents to plant their own vegetables.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This year each of the Ycap learners won a tablet and the school won R10 000 and the prize money will be towards the sustainability of the project. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cSustainability of the project is of utmost importance. Therefore we have decided that the prize money will be towards the development of an extended vegetable garden and to buy extra gardening tools and seeds,\u201d said Carson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The vegetable garden, established during the 2016 Ycap programme, is operated by parents. They have agreed to extend the garden to grow specific vegetables and herbs especially for the nutrition programme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Owing to Solomon Mahlangu\u2019s winning nutrition management programme, the Department of Education has for their national nutritional week in mid-October, chosen the school to launch the awareness programme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
