A down to earth man of the cloth, the man fighting for the oppressed, is no more. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Reverend Jacob Navan Adonis (66) from the Dale Street Congregational Church in Uitenhage, passed away last Thursday afternoon at Netcare Greenacres Hospital. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
He recently was diagnosed with lung cancer and had to undergo an operation on Friday, August 23, during which one of his lungs was removed. The late Reverend was still in the high care unit with his passing on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Reverend Adonis retired at the end of 2018, after 42 years of faithful service as the spiritual leader at the Dale Street Congregational Church. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
He aspired to be a good pastor to lead his flock; his sermons would testify to substantiate this. Morgan Forbes made a summary of some of the important statistics during these years that Reverend Adonis served at the church: He married approximately 4 472 couples, baptised 33 540 children, confirmed 12 750, did 6 708 funerals and have communion 1 008 times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Reverend Adonis also travelled to Klipplaat, Steytlerville and Addo once a month to be of service to church members. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Over the 42 years of doing so, the distance amounts to approximately 206 400km, whilst during the same years he travelled about 81 000km between his house and the church in Uitenhage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He was born in Queenstown on January 1st, 1953 and had seven brothers and sisters. He commenced his service to the church as a student, during 1972 at Alice. In 1975 he relocated to Mthatha and a year later he was appointed as assistant reverend at the Dale Street Congregational Church in Uitenhage, joining the well-known Reverend Allan Hendrickse. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Reverend Adonis will be remembered as a steadfast servant of God, his family and his congregation. Also for his service above self when it comes to his involvement in the community. Besides his pastoral duties, he was at crucial community meetings of mass mobilisation and always brought a voice of reason. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Reverend Adonis is survived by his wife Ursela Adonis, daughters Debby-Lynn van Dyk and Amber-G Adonis as well as son Benjamin Adonis his wife Leandr\u00e9 Adonis and four grandchildren. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
A memorial service will be held today at the Dale Street Congregational Church at 19:00. The funeral service will be held at the church on Saturday, September 7, 11:00 with an earlier service (10:00) at his residence.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
