THE recent open letter by the Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber has not received a warm welcome from the Nelson Mandela Bay Executive Mayor, who has labelled it as dishonest, disrespectful and out of order.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This comes after the Business Chamber\u2019s Board of Directors voiced their dissatisfaction of the alleged dysfunctional state of the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (NMBM).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Board revealed an analysis of Statistics South Africa that, in comparison to every other metropole in the country, the Nelson Mandela Bay is growing its labour force (of employed and job-seeking people) more slowly. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cTo put it simply, the Nelson Mandela Bay is no longer seen as a destination for job and business opportunity, relative to other South African cities. Equally concerning, many local businesses are struggling to keep their doors open,\u201d the Board said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Board members emphasised the week-long water crisis in Uitenhage with many parts of the town cut off from all water supply. According to them, ageing infrastructure in the entire Nelson Mandela Bay is a matter of huge concern which needs to be addressed proactively. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
They added, \u201cUnspent municipal capital budget (reported to be more than 60% unspent) needs to be urgently utilised to solve these huge infrastructural challenges and secure the city\u2019s water supply. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe cannot only act when the taps run dry in this metro.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Board has since highlighted the following specific areas of concern:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n .<\/span> The municipality has numerous critical vacancies, which have not yet been filled \u2013 some for several years;<\/p>\n\n\n\n \n .<\/span> At the level of basic service delivery, businesses are severely affected by electricity power dips \u2013 particularly when these occur in the industrial areas, with huge material and productivity losses to some of our biggest employers in
