A BUSINESSMAN from Uitenhage experienced a narrow escape on the R75 freeway opposite Daleview on Sunday night when rocks were placed in the road, obstructing all three lanes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAt about 23:45 I was driving back home from Port Elizabeth when I suddenly saw rocks across all three lanes on the road. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAlthough I was driving my Kia 4\u00d74, there was no way that I could miss them,\u201d said Yusuf Mohamed, a businessman from Uitenhage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIn a split second I opted for not hitting the rocks with any of the wheels. It was a tight situation, as the rocks were placed about one metre apart. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cLuckily I managed to drive over them, but it hit the underpart of my vehicle very hard.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mohamed said he knew there was no way that he could have stopped as not only was he travelling at a speed of 120km\/h, but stopping could have meant a possible attack by the culprits who placed the rocks in the road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI immediately informed the police about the incident, as I know there definitely will be more road users who will be confronted with these obstacles.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Police spokesperson Captain Gerda Swart said no case about the incident was opened by Monday, nor did they receive any other similar reports, but the police are aware of the problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cPolice from Despatch on Sunday night patrolled the area and removed the rocks from the road. No suspects could be found in the area,\u201d said Captain Swart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mohamed said that he would lay a criminal charge as his vehicle was damaged by the rocks in the road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI urge the Daleview community leaders as well as community policing forum to do something about this criminal behaviour before someone gets hurt. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe culprits most probably are from the Daleview community,\u201d said Mohamed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Other road users who might have experienced the same as Mohamed are requested to lay charges at the Despatch police station. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
