A LEARNER from Riebeek College won a trip to Silicon Valley, San Francisco and enjoyed the opportunity to also visit the Intel Museum, Facebook and Apple as well as Google offices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe itinerary was packed and we took every possible opportunity to make the trip as fruitful as possible,\u201d said Sara Gopal, an Allan Gray Entrepreneurship Challenge top learner, currently in Grade 11 at Riebeek College.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At the end of 2018, Sara in her Grade 9 year was placed in the top three in an Allan Gray entrepreneurship challenge for Grade 8 to 12 learners in South Africa. She then travelled to Johannesburg to attend the Allan Gray Entrepreneurship Challenge Awards Ceremony where it was announced that she came second overall. As part of her prizes, she won a trip to Silicon Valley, San Francisco, during December 2019. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe met many inspiring and innovative entrepreneurs. One that I was most inspired by is Komal Ahmad, founder and CEO of Copia, a for profit food recovery organisation that uses technology to redistribute food from businesses that have excess to non profit organisations in need,\u201d said Sara.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Some of the other highlights of the trip Sara enjoyed were experiencing the virtual reality lab at Standford University, attending the Teen Tech Global Summit and visiting NASA Ames Research Center. In her free time she explored famous tourist attractions in San Francisco including Union Square, Fisherman\u2019s Wharf and Golden Gate Bridge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Other highlights included watching a Golden State Warriors vs NY Knicks NBA basketball game at the Chase Centre, visiting the Museum of Ice Cream, the Exploratorium and the California Academy of Sciences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
