THIS year Algoa FM\u2019s Big Walk for Cancer 2020, presented by the Eastern Cape Department of Health, is going virtual with walkers taking to the streets in support of those affected by cancer all over South Africa and around the world on October 31.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
COVID-19 restrictions on mass events have been turned into an advantage as this year\u2019s participation is not restricted to those living in or around Port Elizabeth, said Algoa FM marketing manager, Lesley Geyer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAlgoa FM\u2019s Big Walk for Cancer is the Eastern Cape\u2019s biggest mass participation charity event and we are excited about the opportunity of involving everyone that have been affected by cancer,\u201d Geyer added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe expect to see pictures of walkers in pink T-shirts from sites all around the world as people complete their five kilometre walk through their neighbourhoods.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This year\u2019s beneficiary is the Igazi Foundation. The funds will go towards purchasing equipment needed to be able to continue treating blood cancer cases in the Eastern Cape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIgazi is humbled to be a beneficiary of the first \u2018Virtual\u2019 Algoa FM Big Walk for Cancer, allowing us to continue serving the needs of blood cancer patients in the Eastern Cape,\u201d the foundation\u2019s Cole Cameron said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Algoa FM managing director, Alfie Jay, said the event has been a highlight on the Eastern Cape\u2019s calendar for the past 22 years and they are looking forward to the challenge of going virtual this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIt would be all too easy during this COVID-19 pandemic to forget about other diseases such as cancer,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe Virtual Algoa FM Big Walk for Cancer presented by the Eastern Cape Department of Health allows us to celebrate the lives of cancer survivors and those close to them. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cBy walking, we celebrate the steps that patients and their loved ones have taken since being diagnosed with cancer.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
