Three people have died in fires in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro
\nover the course of this weekend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In the first incident, two people died after their dwelling
\nin an informal settlement in KwaNobuhle went up in flames in the early hours of
\nthis morning, December 5.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Police spokesperson, Capt. Gerda Swart, said that police
\nresponded to a complaint in Vuba Street at approximately 03:00 when they
\nnoticed that an informal home was on fire. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe fire department was already on the scene, busy
\nextinguishing the fire. Two bodies, an unknown male and unknown woman, were
\ndiscovered in the debris,\u201d Swart said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe names of the victims will be released once their next-of-kin
\nhave been notified. Investigations are continuing,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Police have opened an inquest docket.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In a separate incident at approximately 04:00 this morning,
\na 42-year-old man died after his flatlet burnt down in Xesi Street, New
\nBrighton.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It is alleged that last night, the man and his friends were
\ndrinking together at the flat when the light bulb fused.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Police spokesperson, Col. Priscilla Naidu, said that the man
\nallegedly lit a candle and propped it up on a speaker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAt about 04:00, residents alerted police of the fire. The
\nman had already burned to death,\u201d Naidu said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAn inquest is under investigation. His identity will be
\nwithheld until his next-of-kin has been traced,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She urged residents to ensure that burning candles and lamps
\nare extinguished before going to bed as most fatalities are caused through
\nnegligence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
