A landmine was discovered by two children in the Strelitzia Dam in Kariega at the weekend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to police spokesperson, W\/O Majola Nkohli, the children were playing at the now empty dam on Sunday, October 23 when they discovered something that \u201clooked like a landmine\u201d at approximately 17:45. Kariega police were notified and the Gqeberha Explosive Section called out to the scene.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cPreliminary investigations revealed that it was a shell of a TM46 landmine that was inactive, and the shell was removed by the Unit. Further sweeping of the area will be done again during this week by the unit,\u201d Nkohli said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This discovery was made three years after several mortars were found in the dam in October 2019. By February 2020, at least 20 mortars have been found in the dam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
