When it comes to employee rights, Danie Mars from Kariega is passionate about encouraging every employed person to familiarise themselves with them. Mars said in the almost 40 years that he has worked, he\u2019s seen and experienced some of the most traumatic things in the workplace\u2026\u201cand that\u2019s why I\u2019ve decided to put it all in a book,\u201d the 65-year-old said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cA few years ago I decided to write a book detailing some of the hardships I went through while still in the workforce. I experienced so many things that were just wrong, and I decided that I was not going to just sit and do nothing about it. I escalated the matter further and further, and when the company I worked for didn\u2019t take my grievances seriously, I involved the law,\u201d Mars said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many South Africans face challenges in the workplace, but often don\u2019t know how to deal with them, whom to go to first, and what processes to follow. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cPeople end up suffering psychological damage due to the hardships they face at their jobs, and if like me when I still worked, you work with heavy machinery, even physical injuries can alter your life forever,\u201d Mars said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Employees in all sectors need to know their rights, how the company works, the rules and injury possibilities in some cases. And how far the companies are supposed to support you should you unfortunately be injured. These are just some things I touch on in my book, and I encourage people, especially young people, to familiarise themselves with these things and know what to do. I\u2019m no expert, I\u2019m just a person who has worked for many years using my experience to inspire and caution others.<\/div>\n

The Suffocated Worker is Mars\u2019 first book, and he says he is proud of putting it together and actually finishing it. \u201cI would write this book in moments of isolation, and I must say, even while writing it, I never thought I\u2019d ever get to this point where I\u2019m preparing to launch it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His wife, Roseline Mars has been incredibly supportive of her husband. \u201cMy family is a lovely suffocation,\u201d Mars laughed, \u201cI\u2019m so grateful to have them, and the support they give me,\u201d the father of three added. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mars is planning on launching his book on Friday, November 24 at the Uitenhage Town Hall. \u201cI do have a few copies of my book for people who would be interested in buying one before the intended launch.
