{"id":44877,"date":"2024-01-25T08:34:46","date_gmt":"2024-01-25T06:34:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/udexpress\/nmbm-improves-road-safety-for-pupils-as-schools-reopen-20240125-3\/"},"modified":"2025-03-21T13:40:51","modified_gmt":"2025-03-21T11:40:51","slug":"nmbm-improves-road-safety-for-pupils-as-schools-reopen-20240125-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/udexpress\/nmbm-improves-road-safety-for-pupils-as-schools-reopen-20240125-3\/","title":{"rendered":"NMBM improves road safety for pupils as schools reopen"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality has committed to ensure that pupils are safe on the roads as they come to and from school across the metro, by embarking on a road safety awareness programme, fixing and monitoring pedestrian crossings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Member of the Mayoral Committee for Roads and Transport, Councillor Bradley Murray, visited the Sanctor Primary and Sanctor High Schools on January 16 to conduct oversight on the work that has been done in line with the school road safety programme.&nbsp;This programme seeks to ensure that pupils are safe by refurbishing pedestrian crossings, maintenance of traffic calming measures (speed humps), and road signs around various schools in Gqeberha, Despatch and Kariega.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Murray said that this will be an ongoing programme to encourage and ensure scholar road safety and a safer school environment.&nbsp;The initiative will also contribute to reducing pedestrian accidents across the metro.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div contenteditable=\"false\" data-embed24=\"Blockquote\" data-pos=\"middle\" id=\"embed_50bd2098\">\n<div class=\"text\">We will evaluate streets alongside schools and make roads safer for learners. It is our responsibility as a department and municipality to ensure that these little kids get a chance to navigate traffic safely.<\/div>\n<div class=\"citation\">Murray<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Sanctor Primary School was one of the first schools to be included in the programme.&nbsp;School principal, Dr Virginia Didloft, expressed her gratitude by presenting a certificate of appreciation to the MMC of Roads and Transport.&nbsp;\u201cNow that the pedestrian crossings are highlighted and reinforced, it\u2019s going to mean so much for the safety of our learners.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt will make a big difference in the lives of our learners ensuring that they come to school safely, and go back home safely,\u201d she
