In commemoration of Women\u2019s Month, the Sundays River Valley Municipality joined forces with the South African Police Service (SAPS), Legal Aid South Africa, and the Ilanga Victim Support Centre to host a safety roadblock on the R336 road in Nqweba (formerly known as Kirkwood).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The event, held recently, brought together women from various institutions to share vital information on road and home safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Municipal spokesperson, Zusiphe Jaji, emphasised the significance of the initiative, stating, \u201cAs we celebrate Women\u2019s Month, it is essential to acknowledge the critical issue of women\u2019s safety in our society. Today\u2019s roadblock is a proactive step towards creating awareness and providing support to women who may be vulnerable to gender-based violence and femicide.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the roadblock, stakeholders stopped vehicles to conduct thorough safety checks, including vehicle fitness, driver fitness, and overloading inspections. However, the primary focus was on engaging with motorists, particularly women, to share crucial information on safety measures and available support services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jaji added, \u201cWe want to empower women with knowledge on how to protect themselves and their loved ones. We also want to assure them that help is available if they find themselves in situations of abuse or violence.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As motorists passed through the roadblock, they were greeted with warm wishes of \u201cHappy Women\u2019s Day\u201d and encouraged to prioritise their safety on the roads and in their homes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By working together with stakeholders, the municipality aims to create a safer and more supportive environment for women in the Sundays River Valley community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
