SIXTEEN days of activism might be over, but the Sundays River Valley Municipality (SRVM) is committed to continuing the fight against gender-based violence (GBV) every day of the year. Recently, a successful event was held in Langbos, a small settlement outside Addo, reinforcing the district\u2019s pledge to combat GBV, promote healthcare awareness, and unlock economic opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The rural community of Langbos was bustling with activities that included young and old. Central to the day\u2019s agenda were discussions on GBV, HIV and TB awareness, and enhancing economic prospects within the community. The event highlighted the importance of ongoing education and support to tackle these pressing issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Department of Employment and Labour played a crucial role by registering unemployed community members on their work seekers database. This move is designed to connect job seekers with potential employers while reducing unemployment rates. There was also a strong emphasis on protecting minors, with community members encouraged to report any instances of underage employment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Eastern Cape Department of Social Development contributed significantly, highlighting the support available to victims of GBV. Officials encouraged community members to consider forming cooperatives, which could address economic challenges that often correlate with domestic violence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Adding to the multi-faceted approach of the event, the Department of Health provided invaluable services by offering mobile health check-ups. These included screenings and tests for HIV and TB, alongside TB X-ray screenings, ensuring that health remains a priority for the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In a show of administrative support, the Department of Home Affairs facilitated ID application and collection processes, making it more convenient for residents to obtain essential identity documents. Held at the local Early Childhood Development (ECD) Centre, managed by a dedicated NGO, the event seamlessly integrated with the Marist Mercy Care\u2019s Summer Holiday School Program.
