Macethandile Max Kulati, a determined bodybuilder from the informal settlement of Tambo Village, Kwa-Langa in Kariega, is preparing to make history by competing at the prestigious international bodybuilding competitions in Russia and the United Kingdom in 2025. Representing not just South Africa but the entire African continent, Kulati hopes to inspire others while conquering new heights in global bodybuilding.
“I want to break records and be the first wheelchair professional bodybuilder to compete in Russia while representing Africa. This is more than just a personal achievement; it’s about breaking barriers and showing the potential of African talent on a global stage,” Kulati said.
A former Eastern Cape powerlifter, Kulati credits his journey in global bodybuilding to a friend who spotted his potential at a local gym in Kariega. He recalled how that pivotal moment changed his life. “My friend told me I could achieve more in bodybuilding if I gave it a try. I trusted his advice, and I fell in love with the sport. Even though dieting and financial constraints have been some of my biggest challenges, I’ve never looked back.”
Bodybuilding, Kulati explains, is more than just lifting weights. “Nutrition, supplements, time, discipline, hard work, and dedication are all key to the sport. Nutrition is especially critical – what you eat off-season impacts your performance when you’re on-season,” he emphasised. He added that supplements help with muscle recovery and filling nutritional gaps, while time management is essential to sticking to strict training and meal schedules for global bodybuilding success.
Discipline is another cornerstone of his success. “Whether on stage or off stage, I always strive to be a role model, especially for young, up-and-coming athletes. Hard work is non-negotiable in this sport. Everything you earn comes from putting in the effort,” he said. Despite his determination, Kulati’s road to success has not been without challenges. Preparing for global bodybuilding competitions requires significant financial resources for travel, accommodation, nutrition, and supplements. Kulati is reaching out for sponsorship, hoping it will enable him to compete without the constant stress of funding his journey. “Representing my country is one of the biggest blessings I’ve received from God. Many athletes dream of representing South Africa but are held back by financial constraints. It’s heartbreaking to see potential go unrealised due to a lack of support,” he said.
Kulati called on government officials and organisations to provide greater assistance to athletes like him who are striving to represent South Africa on the international stage. “It’s disheartening that so many of us struggle to secure funds, yet when we achieve glory, the celebration is widespread. I urge the people in power to step forward and support athletes who make this country proud.”
His upcoming journey will take him to Russia on July 26 this year, followed by Coventry in the UK on October 26. The combined cost of the trips includes flights, accommodation, and competition fees, which Kulati is working hard to raise through sponsorship. “I would be delighted to represent brands on my social media platforms, on local and international stages, and in my interviews as a token of my appreciation for their support. It would also be an honour to serve as a brand ambassador.”
Reflecting on his journey so far, Kulati shared, “This journey has taught me that nothing in life comes easy. There have been tough times – people trying to break my spirit or feeling threatened by what I could achieve – but I’ve learned to hold my head high. There are so many people motivated by our hard work, and that keeps me going. It’s a part of the global bodybuilding perseverance I’ve embraced.”
Kulati is currently training tirelessly, aiming to showcase his hard work and dedication on the global bodybuilding stage. “This sport has shown me flames,” he laughed, “but it’s also shown me that perseverance and focus can keep your dreams alive.”
With enough backing, Kulati said he can achieve greatness, not just as an athlete but as an African ambassador in the world of professional bodybuilding.
