HOLIDAYS need careful planning, that includes making plans for the care and well-being of your animals. Do not leave it to the last minute.

Here are some tips to take in consideration before you leave your pet/s to go on holiday. These tips are from the Uitenhage &District SPCA:

Abandoned:

Neighbours or walkers hearing a dog/dogs barking continuously (or another pet in distress) at a residence where it is obvious that the owners are away on holiday and the pets are abandoned, are requested to call the SPCA and report the matter. But, first make sure if there is not a house-sitter who has to feed the pet/s or check on their well-being before reporting the matter. It does happen that people move during December and leave pets behind, thus double check the situation.

Fireworks:

If there will be fireworks in your area, do not let your pets face the terror alone. Most animals are terrified of fireworks, especially when you take in consideration that fireworks are five times louder for cats and dogs than for humans. Keep your pets inside and make sure there will be somebody to stay with them, keeping them calm.

House-sitter:

Make sure your house-sitter knows to which veterinarian to take the pet to in case of an emergency. Make sure the house-sitter has all the necessary contact numbers in case of an emergency. Also arrange for an alternative person in case the house-sitter for some reason cannot continue to look after your pet/s. It is important that your pet knows the house-sitter in advance of your absence.

Identification:

Make sure that your pet has been microchipped or wear a collar and tag identification. This makes it so much easier when your pet does get out or lost.

Pet visits:

Pets of which the owners are away, must be visited a minimum of once daily, because an animal that becomes sick or stressed can deteriorate rapidly and animals do need companionship.

Secure premises:

If you are going away on holiday, make sure your premises are secured so that your pet will not break out. Also, that strangers cannot easily get access to your pets.
