KuGOMPO CITY – Buffalo City Metro has unveiled a new fleet of 12 specialised waste management trucks that will strengthen the municipality’s solid waste management services in all three regions of the Metro, including coastal, midland and inland areas.

The new solid waste vehicle fleet was officially unveiled at a handover ceremony held at the Gonubie Resort in KuGompo City on Tuesday, 13 October.

The fleet, which includes 10 compactor trucks, a tipper truck and a landfill compactor truck for the Metro’s Solid Waste and Environmental Management Directorate, further strengthens the municipality’s vehicle fleet operations and waste collection and removal services in Buffalo City’s major areas, including KuGompo City, Mdantsane, Bhisho, Qonce and Dimbaza.

Speaking during the handover ceremony, Buffalo City Metro Executive Mayor, Princess Faku, said the new investment in waste management vehicles reflects the commitment of the Metro to improve basic service delivery, fight illegal dumping, improve waste removal and ensure a clean and healthier environment for all residents in Buffalo City.

“The procurement and investment in specialised compactor trucks will strengthen daily refuse collection, improve environmental cleanliness and enhance service delivery throughout Buffalo City. This is to strengthen and improve the Metro’s capacity to deliver reliable, efficient and sustainable waste management services to our communities,” said Faku.

Faku added that the ceremonial handover of the specialised trucks and machinery demonstrated the Metro’s commitment to build a municipality that responds to the needs of the people, restore dignity to communities and ensure that residents live in a clean, healthy and safe environment.

Faku also urged residents of Buffalo City and local businesses to work together with the Metro in keeping towns and townships safe and clean.

The Metro, in partnership with the Border-Kei Chamber of Business (BKCOB) and the Mercedes-Benz South Africa (MBSA) local manufacturing plant, has launched a massive clean-up campaign which involves beautification and greening of KuGompo City in an attempt to attract investment to Buffalo City.

In February last year, the Metro unveiled a vehicle fleet which included three compactor trucks and 13 bakkies for its key service delivery departments, including the Solid Waste and Environmental Management Directorate and the Municipal Health Services Unit.
