Oh, love! His girlfriend just dumped him, and the last thing he needs is to be reminded of sweet love!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He swiftly closes the curtain, turns on the television and stares at Tom Hanks professing his love to Meg Ryan in Sleepless in \u00adSeattle<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He changes the channel furiously, skipping past Four Weddings and a Funeral<\/span>, Pretty Women<\/span> and When Harry met Sally<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Impossible!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He goes to the nature channel and sees \u00adsome bird doing an elaborate mating dance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He turns on the radio and listens with teary eyes to the lyrics of \u201cLet\u2019s Do It\u201d by Cole Porter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAnd that\u2019s why birds do it, bees do it <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even educated fleas do it <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let\u2019s do it, let\u2019s fall in love.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He gives up and stares at the television while the song plays . . .<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Truly, falling in love is one of the most natural things in this love-crazed world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the telly flamingos parade en masse while displaying their necks and swivelling their beaks, greater sage-grouses strut competitively and pop their yellow neck sacs (real\u00adly loudly) and hooded seals blow red air sacs from their heart-shaped nostrils.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Porter continues: \u201cRomantic sponges, they say, do it, oysters down in Oyster Bay do it . . .<\/span> Electric eels, I might add, do it, though it shocks \u2018em I know. Why ask if shad do it? Waiter, bring me shad roe!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He has no idea who this \u201cShad\u201d is and why he\u2019s rowing, but it must be something to do with love.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNo more,\u201d he cries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He sees blue-footed marine birds hop from side to side to show off their spectacular blue feet and Japanese cranes leap, bow and flap their wings in a hauntingly beautiful court\u00adship dance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m sure giraffes on the sly do it, even eagles as they fly do it. Let\u2019s do it, let\u2019s fall in love.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He summons energy from unknown reserves and peeks through the curtain again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two birds sit perched high on a roof, close together, one head resting securely against the other\u2019s neck, behind them a heart-shaped cloud drifts in front of a romantic sunset.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIn Spain, the best upper sets do it, Lithuanians and Letts do it. Let\u2019s do it, let\u2019s fall in love.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

OK, OK! He picks up his phone and thinks of Alain de Botton\u2019s quote: \u201cAwareness of the insanity of love has never saved anyone from the disease.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He will send his ex one last message pleading forgiveness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just before he sends the message his phone beeps . . .<\/span> A message from her!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cLook out of the window at the heart-shaped cloud,\u201d she exclaims, before adding, \u201cI was a little rash. Will you forgive me?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He smiles from ear-to-ear, glad to be loved once more! Love isn\u2019t fleeting after all!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He didn\u2019t notice the heart-shaped cloud has shifted and the doves flew away. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He switches off the television before a programme on shark attacks. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It only matters what one thinks, as Shakespeare said: \u201cLove looks not with the eyes, but with the mind, and therefore is winged Cupid painted blind.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
