A 34-year-old police officer charged with attempted murder and assault was released on bail last week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The officer, whose identity cannot be revealed in order to protect the victim and complainant in the matter, appeared in the Blue Downs Magistrate\u2019s Court on Wednesday 16 November. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
It is alleged that the accused, a member of the Flying Squad in Maitland, tried to murder a nine-month-old baby. TygerBurger <\/em>was informed that no weapons were used during the attack, but that the accused had allegedly used his hands. <\/p>\n\n\n\n The incident took place at a house in the newly developed Fountain Head Complex in Blue Downs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The accused and the complainant in the case, the mother of the baby, are in a relationship. <\/p>\n\n\n\n They are also colleagues in the police service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n On Wednesday, magistrate Vincent Ketye, who described the incident as a schedule five offence \u2013 indicating that it is regarded as being serious \u2013 granted the accused R1\u2009000 bail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n As part of his bail conditions the accused was instructed not to make any contact with the complainant or the victim and not to visit the address in Blue Downs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n He has also been prohibited from visiting his workplace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Should the accused not comply, he will be taken back into custody and his bail forfeited to the state, Ketye said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The accused no longer receives a monthly salary, pending the finalisation of the case. His services in the police have also been suspended until a disciplinary matter is finalised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The police officer was ordered to appear in court again on 14 February 2017. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
