Any Roald Dahl fan will tell you that his take on the Grimm brothers\u2019 fairy tales is interesting, to say the least. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Theatre makers Michaela Faria-Richards from Welgemoed and Goedemoed\u2019s Robert Shenton have combined Dahl\u2019s absurd twists with the dark wit of Lemony Snicket to create a new \u201cdeliciously dark\u201d version of the classic Grimm tale Little Red Riding Hood<\/i>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Dahl\u2019s version is strange enough, ending with Red Riding Hood acquiring a wolf skin coat. For The Woods<\/i>, Michaela says: \u201cWe take it a smidge further\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The writing pair originally wrote the piece to use as a fundraiser last year and will be staging it again this week for the Masque Theatre\u2019s New Talent Festival. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
This time round they\u2019ve had more time to polish the production since the first take of The Woods <\/i>had to be put together in just two weeks in tense circumstances. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
They had just finished working on Romeo and Juliet: Sort of <\/i>when Michaela heard of a cancer patient in need of financial assistance and offered to help. <\/p>\n\n\n\n With an idea about wanting to play with classic fairy tales, she \u201ctearfully\u201d turned to Robert to help with a script after realising what she\u2019d gotten herself into. Taking inspiration from Roald Dahl\u2019s Revolting Rhymes<\/i>, Robert says he decided \u201cto take Red Riding Hood, put our own spin on it and write entirely in prose\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n He was on a conference in Johannesburg though and wrote from his hotel room at all hours of the night, between sending stressed-out messages to his director. \u201cI was literally dreaming in rhymes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n He arrived back in Cape Town a week and a half later, but The Woods <\/i>still needed an ending and a cast. The pair says the experience was a serious test of their friendship. \u201cI was this close to moving to Canada,\u201d Robert jokes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n In the end, The Woods <\/i>ran for two nights at The Galloway Theatre, raising R16 000, before Michaela and Robert decided to take a break for a year or so \u2026 until Michaela saw an advert for the New Talent Festival. <\/p>\n\n\n\n She\u2019s very excited about the cast for this run. The Woods <\/i>now features the \u201ccute and feisty\u201d Katie Swanepoel as Red, Robert as the \u201cslimy\u201d wolf and the \u201camazing\u201d Mike Fenn as the lumberjack. \u201cHe does this \u2018D\u2019oh\u2019, Matthew McConaughey kind of thing. He\u2019s really funny,\u201d Michaela muses. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Llewellyn van der Berg and Ryan Devilliers are the Grimm brothers with Alex Devilliers as the granny. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Michaela is equally excited about the prospect of performing at the beautiful Masque Theatre where they\u2019ll be playing with stunning lighting in a new set. \u201cIt\u2019s very exciting to do it for such a big theatre,\u201d Robert says. <\/p>\n\n\n\n The Woods <\/i>will be on stage on Wednesday and Saturday, but it joins three other original productions for the festival which runs this week. \u201cThere are going to be so many talented people who are going to be performing at this festival,\u201d Michaela says, adding: \u201cThe tickets are so dirt cheap. Never in your life have you seen quality work for 60 bucks.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n She points out The Masque does a good job of providing a platform for newcomers to the industry and says the festival offers an entertaining and affordable night out. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Also on the festival lineup are the improvised one-hander Bucket List<\/i> and a double bill from Massive Productions: Inkungu ngaphantsi kweNtaba (Cache underneath the Mountain)<\/i> and ISIKO (The Tradition)<\/i>. This year will also feature dance pieces, namely the double bill Misodzi \/ Tears<\/i> and Tapera Baba<\/i>, along with the theatrical exhibition Colovr<\/i>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Woods<\/i> will be back
