Visitors wanting to take a stroll on the sandy beach at Big Bay in Bloubergstrand will have to put their plans on hold following the collapse of a dune at the beach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The beachfront area has been closed off to the public until further notice, the City of Cape Town said in a statement. This comes after one of its employees were injured when a dune at the beach caved in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In a statement the City says the dune collape is the result of the inclement weather experienced this week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cA City official was injured when the dune he was standing on collapsed. He has been taken to hospital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cPublic access to Big Bay beach have been closed off until the stability of the dunes has been established,\u201d Suzette Little, mayco member for area north, says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The severe weather experienced on Wednesday and Thursday damaged several properties, infrastructure and caused floods in some areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cBig Bay beach has suffered extensive damage and erosion as a result of the stormy weather that Cape Town has experienced over those 48 hours. The area is unstable and unsafe. We therefore urge the public to adhere to the interim restrictions for their own safety and not to access Big Bay beach until further notice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIn the meantime, our officials are on site and are making every effort to determine the stability of the eroded shoreline at Big Bay. The public should please adhere to the signage and red tape restricting access. We want to thank the public for their patience and cooperation during this time,\u201d Little says.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
