At least 10 people were injured when a train carriage
\nderailed near Bellville Railway Station on Friday morning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The train was on its way to Cape Town from Strand when the
\nincident happened at 07:54, says Metrorail\u2019s spokesperson, Riana Scott.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cCommuters sustained light injuries when they jumped out of
\nthe carriage in panic \u2013 all were treated by emergency services.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She said Platform 11 at Bellville station is closed while
\non-site investigations are in progress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe incident compounded delays on the northern line. Delays
\ncurrently are longer than 60 minutes due to the incident and signal equipment
\nfailure on the approach to Cape Town station.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Werner Vermaak, spokesperson for ER24, says they arrived on
\nthe scene at around 08:15 along with numerous other emergency services
\nincluding Metro EMS and the police. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cFive passengers were found near the platform and another
\nfive were found on the far side of the tracks. Upon assessment, paramedics
\nfound they had sustained scrapes and bruises while one person had sustained a
\nmoderate injury to her knee.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The injured were transported to Karl Bremer and Tygerberg
\nhospitals for further care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe exact circumstances surrounding the incident are not
\nyet known. Local railway authorities attended the scene and will conduct an
\ninvestigation,\u201d Vermaak said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Richard Walker, regional manager of Metrorail, confirmed
\nthat every attempt will be made to clear the line as soon as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cBellville is a strategic station on our northern network;
\nfortunately we have several lines and platforms where trains can be re-directed
\nto. We advise customers to listen to public address announcements for platform
\nchanges.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Scott advised commuters to consult Metrorail\u2019s passenger
\ninformation channels for updates and service alerts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\nrequested to kindly share the information with fellow commuters.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
