Neighbourhood
\nwatches in the northern suburbs of Cape Town, still have until 31 January to
\nsubmit nominations for watches and their members, who have gone above and
\nbeyond the call of duty during the course of last year, for the 2018
\nNeighbourhood Watch (NHW) Awards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe
\nNeighbourhood Watch Awards 2018 will honour accredited neighbourhood watches in
\nthe City. The different categories in the 2018 NHW Awards are designed to
\nhonour the many different ways in which NHW members contribute towards safety.
\nThis includes formal patrols, those who work closely with the various emergency
\nservices, who assist with social issues; who work with religious organisations
\nand NGOs; or even those working closely with our schools,\u201d says Western Cape
\nMinister of Community Safety, Dan Plato. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mayco
\nmember for Social Services, Safety and Security in the Cit, JP Smith says
\nneighbourhood watches are force multipliers in the fight against crime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe
\nwatches together with Law Enforcement, Metro Police, and other safety entities
\nare transforming our City in becoming  a safer environment. Their work
\ncontribute significantly towards building safer communities in Cape Town. Their
\nmembers dedicate their time and often some of their own resources towards this
\ngoal,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the
\nlast decade, the City has invested millions of Rand to train volunteers and
\nprovide neighbourhood watch organisations with equipment like jackets, torches,
\nbicycles, hand radios and radio base stations for their watch rooms and has
\npartnered with these organisations to install and share information between
\nCCTV camera networks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe reason
\nwe invest so much in our NHW\u2019s is because we have seen the positive impact that
\nthey are making in their communities.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According
\nto Plato, the legal framework for NHW structures in the Western Cape created in
\n2017, provides legal legitimacy to all those NHW structures who are
\nsuccessfully accredited. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since its
\ninception about 200 NHW across the province have been issued with Certificates
\nof Accreditation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIn
\nSeptember 2017, DOCS signed a historic Neighbourhood Watch Memorandum of
\nAgreement with the City of Cape Town to co-ordinate our support for Accredited
\nNHWs, across the city,\u201d he adds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe NHW
\nAwards, borne from the this partnership will showcase our appreciation of our
\nNHWs and their members as treasured safety partners.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Categories<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anyone can
\nnominate an individual member or an entire NHW team. You can also nominate the same
\nperson or team for more than one award category, but will need to submit
\nindividual nominations for each of them. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bronze
\nCategory: Neighbourhood Watch teams of Distinction<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These
\nawards will not be presented at the awards ceremony, and instead will be chosen
\nfrom among the nominations and the judges\u2019 experience during 2017.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

-Community
\nService Excellence: for noteworthy excellence displayed in any form.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

-Education
\nSupport Excellence: for excellence in support for school and scholar safety, in
\nparticular, support for the Department of Community Safety-led Walking Bus
\nProgramme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

-Skills
\nTraining Excellence: recognises the development of a wide range of skills for
\ncomprehensive community safety and support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

-Organisational
\nExcellence: for excellence in NHW management that helps to create professional,
\ncapable and accountable neighbourhood watch teams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

-Operational
\nCommitment: for exceptional and sustained operational commitment in partnership
\nwith the state safety, security and emergency agencies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Silver
\nCategory: Individual Excellence Awards<\/p>\n\n\n\n

-Mobiliser
\nof the Year: for exceptional efforts to mobilise communities in support of
\nsafety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

-Skills
\nMaster of the Year: in recognition of exceptional skills relevant to NHW duties
\nand community safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

-Mentor of
\nthe Year: in recognition of a NHW that has gone to extraordinary lengths to
\nnurture a next generation of capable, committed NHW teams. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

-Inspiration
\nof the Year: a NHW leader who has displayed inspirational public leadership,
\nacross several NHW areas, in support of community safety and the greater public
\ngood. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

-Crime
\nFighter of the Year: for exceptional, selfless, professional and committed
\nservice, in the fight against the scourge of crime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gold
\nCategory: Leaders\u2019 Choice<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is
\nadjudicated by the Mayor, Minster for Community Safety and the South African
\nPolice Service Provincial Commissioner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\nMember and\/or Mayor\u2019s Outstanding Achievement Award<\/p>\n\n\n\n

-MEC\u2019s
\nOutstanding Achievement Award<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\nInnovative Award: in recognition of innovative, progressive, smart and
\nintegrated use of technology, towards community safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

-Broken
\nWindow Award: in recognition of exceptional efforts towards a clean, healthy
\nand safe environment, in which communities can lead dignified lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

-Above
\n& Beyond Award: in recognition of exceptional efforts, above and beyond the
\ncall of duty, to address a community safety issue in support of the public
\ngood. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\nResponsibility Award: in recognition of a deep commitment to address, mitigate
\nand heal societal ills, towards healthier, inclusive and united communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\nAction Award: in recognition of sustained NHW operations in the face of highly
\ncompromised community safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

-NHW of the
\nYear: the team that best represents exemplary commitment and values consistent
\nwith the broader NHW movement, the Constitution of the Republic of South
\nAfrica, the Western Cape Provincial Government and the City of Cape Town.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How to
\nnominate <\/p>\n\n\n\n

-Only NHW
\nmembers or teams that are accredited with DoCS or who have formally submitted
\ntheir application for accreditation can be nominated. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

-Nominations
\ncan only be submitted online from Monday, 1 January 2018 \u2013 Wednesday, 31
\nJanuary 2018 at 17:00. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

-When
\ncompleting your online nomination, you will need to provide a body of evidence
\nto support the nomination. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The NHW
\nAwards for 2017 will be held on Friday, 23 February 2018. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two judging
\npanels will assess the nominations received from each of the four City areas.
\nThe panels will consist of representatives from the City, Department of
\nCommunity Safety and the SAPS. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The
\nfinalists will be notified on 12 February 2018 and will receive an invitation
\nto the awards ceremony. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
