Metrorail
\nin the Western Cape is closing in on criminals following the arrests of five
\npeople on Thursday 1 February in Bonteheuwel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According
\nto spokesperson Riana Scott, during a special operation, two men were arrested
\nbetween Netreg and Bontheuwel, still in possession of stolen railway cables.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNinety
\nminutes later, three more arrests were made in the same area, also for being in
\npossession of stolen railway components. All five suspects were handed over to
\nBishop Lavis police for processing in terms of the Criminal Matters Amendment
\nAct.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Metrorail\u2019s
\nregional manager, Richard Walker, says the assistance of the public plays a
\nsignificant role in such arrests: \u201cScores of tip-offs reach our offices and we
\nfollow up on every one \u2013 most yield positive results.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trains on
\nthe central line remain closed with no tickets being sold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The railway
\ncompany says a multifunctional team of engineering, train operations and safety
\nand security personnel are working around the clock to ensure that all the
\ncomponents of the suspended central line\u2019s service recovery plan are
\nimplemented as soon as safely possible. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCommunities
\nadjacent to the railway lines are advised that the overhead electricity remains
\nlive while technicians are working on the line. Traction power is 11 kilovolts
\nand 50 times more potent than domestic electricity \u2013 any interference with the
\nsystem can lead to electrocution,\u201d says Scott.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bishop
\nLavis police spokesperson, Captain Ettienne Conradie, has confirmed that the
\nfive men, aged between 17 and 34 years, were arrested while officers were doing
\noperational duties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe

\u201cSAPS once
\nagain appeals to the community to come forward to stop crime, as this type of
\ncrime not only hampers rail transport and the economy, but also endangers the
\nlives of the perpetrators,\u201d says Conradie. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Scott, of
\nMetrorail, says the public is encouraged to keep reporting suspected criminal
\nactivity to the police. Full anonymity of the information sources is guaranteed
\nand a reward of up to R25 000 is payable for any information leading to a
