A 36-year-old man briefly appeared at the Bellville
\nMagistrate\u2019s Court yesterday (Wednesday 17 May) on charges of human trafficking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The man was arrested for his apparent involvement in forcing
\na 37-year-old woman \u201cinto a life of drugs and sex work\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Police spokesperson, Captain Philani Nkwalase, says the
\nvictim was apparently recruited to travel from Johannesburg to Cape Town under
\nfalse pretenses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cOn arrival [in Cape Town] she was received by the alleged
\nsuspect, who kept her against her will in Parksig Villas, Bellville and forced
\nher into a life of drugs and prostitution from 5 to 21 January this year,\u201d he
\nsays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Nkwalase says the matter was reported to the Hawks for
\ninvestigation after the victim asked for help from a Law Enforcement officer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe victim was put in a place of safety and further
\ninvestigations by the Hawks eventually secured the identity and arrest of the
\nsuspect.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The suspect was refused bail and will remain in police
\ncustody until his next appearance in July.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
