Eskom has implemented Stage 1 load shedding and anticipates
\nthat it will last until 21:00 on Friday 15 June.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The load shedding is a direct result of recent protest
\naction by some of Eskom employees over wage increases at some outlets,
\naccording to an Eskom media statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Although there is a high risk of load shedding over the
\nweekend, the power utility says they are working with all relevant stakeholders
\nto keep its plants operating in ways most favourable to citizens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cEskom calls on all consumers to assist by reducing their
\nelectricity consumption by switching off geysers, electric heating, pool pumps
\nand all non-essential appliances throughout the day,\u201d the statement reads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cCustomers are cautioned to treat all electrical connections
\nas live during this period. We would like to thank our workers who have
\ncontinued working under very difficult circumstances and all South Africans who
\nhave heeded the call to action to use electricity sparingly.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A group of workers belonging to the National Union of
\nMetalworkers (Numsa) picketed outside Eskom\u2019s regional office in Bellville
\nyesterday (Thursday 14 June) as a form of protest against the employer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe want Eskom to give us a 15 per cent wage increase, but
\nthey are offering us nothing at the moment. We also want women to be granted
\nsix months\u2019 maternity leave and housing allowance, among others,\u201d Khangela
\nBaloyi, regional Numsa shop steward, told TygerBurger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe will continue picketing until such time as our demands
\nare met.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Baloyi said that a strike is not yet on the cards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
