<\/span>and her family
\non Christmas day in 2016, Matthysen\u2019s mother Carol Petersen revealed this week.<\/p>\n\n\n\nShe spoke to TygerBurger in an exclusive interview at her
\nhome in Sarepta, Kuils River yesterday (4 July.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The lunch came about after the 47-year-old accused, assisted
\nChantell Matthysen and her son who were stranded at Wellington train station
\nthat year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThis all started around Easter 2016. My daughter (Chantell)
\nand her son were on their way to Worcester, but they got into the wrong train
\nand ended up in Wellington. Johan (Williams) was a security guard at the
\nstation. When he (Johan) learned that Chantell took the wrong train, he looked
\nafter her and her son for the night. There were no more trains coming past
\nWellington because there are only a few trains a day. The following morning he
\nmade sure they made it to Worcester by putting her on a taxi,\u201d said Petersen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Matthysen told her mother that Williams bought them supper
\nand made sure they were safe on the night they were stranded. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
As a token of her appreciation, Petersen and her husband
\ninvited Williams, his wife and three children to their home for Christmas
\nlunch. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe even bought his children gifts because we couldn\u2019t thank
\nhim enough and also gave them money to go back home to Wellington. We were just
\nvery grateful.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
They became well-acquainted during that time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In the months leading up to Matthysen leaving for Wellington
\non <\/span>the fateful Saturday (23 June 2018),
\nPetersen says that their family had remained in contact with Williams. <\/p>\n\n\n\nWilliams contacted Petersen to inform her that his wife had
\nfound Matthysen a job as a wine packer at a farm in Wellington. He insisted
\nthat she come that day because it was apparently a night shift position. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cChantell left home at 13:00 (on Saturday 23 June) to
\nBellville train station. She contacted me to say that there\u2019s only a train at
\n15:00 to Wellington. At 16:20, she sent me another message to say he (Johan
\nWilliams) had met her at the station and that she was safe. At 17:20, Chantell
\nmessaged me again to say that they had walked for an hour and they are finally
\nat his place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cShe described his place as a \u2018klein hokkie\u2019 (wendy house)
\nwith a double bed and couch which she assumed she would sleep on. Chantell
\nmessaged me after she had supper then told me she felt like sleeping. I then
\nstarted questioning where his wife is because Chantell was supposed to work
\nnight shift with her.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWilliams told her his wife was in Citrusdal because her
\nmother apparently had a heart attack, but assured Petersen that she would be
\nback in time for night shift. I messaged him again then all of a sudden he said
\nhis wife organised for them to work day shift.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Petersen explained that during the time her daughter had
\nbeen away, she felt content because she remained in contact with her and never
\ngrew too suspicious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cSunday morning I chatted to Chantell again, but from his
\nphone because her phone\u2019s battery was flat. In the message, she said she had
\nstarted working that morning. She messaged me again after 09:00, but the
\nmessage was weird. She used big Afrikaans words such as \u2018behulpsaam\u2019. Then
\nSunday evening I received another message in which it said: \u2018Ek weet nie hoekom
\nek nou so baie na julle verlang. Lief vir ma, my kind en stief pa.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI was shocked because she never calls me \u2018ma\u2019 and she never
\nrefers to her son as \u2018my kind\u2019. She calls her son on his first name because she
\nalways felt strongly that he had his own identity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For two days (Monday and Tuesday) Petersen insisted on speaking
\nto her daughter in person on the phone, as she started getting suspicious of
\nthe \u201cweird messages\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
During this time Williams always responded by saying he was
\nnot with Matthysen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cOn the Wednesday we left home to drive to Wellington.
\nDuring this time, I was chatting to Johan, but never told him that we\u2019re on our
\nway to his place. In a message, he told me he was on his way to George. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWhen we arrived at his place, I let someone else knock on
\nthe door, which he opened. He directed us to the farm at which Chantell was
\napparently working but when we got there, we saw that there was no such thing
\nas wine packing and someone told us that she doesn\u2019t know my daughter, nor her
\nname.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Petersen then approached the police station where she was
\ninformed that Williams\u2019 wife had obtained an interdict against him and had left
\nhim two weeks prior. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Residents in the area confirmed that they had seen Chantell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cPolice instructed us not to go to Johan\u2019s house in case we
\ncame across evidence of my daughter.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The mom-of-two says they were able to obtain a court order
\nto track his phone. Williams was on the run for five days before being arrested
\non Monday. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cHe did not turn himself in. Police caught him. When they
\narrested him, I also saw him and begged him to tell me where my daughter is. He
\nthen asked me to arrange to bring his child to the police station so he could
\nsee his daughter, and in turn he would reveal where Chantell was. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe arranged the visitation, after which he indicated where
\nher body was,\u201d says Petersen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Petersen identified her daughter\u2019s body on Tuesday, 3 July.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Williams appeared in the Wellington Magistrate\u2019s Court on
\nWednesday 4 July on a charge of murder. He was remanded in custody.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cHe is expected to appear in court on Friday 13 July. The
\ncase is still under investigation. Other charges may be added once our
\ninvestigation is complete,\u201d says Western Cape police spokesperson Sergeant
\nNoloyiso Rwexana. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Matthysen will be laid to rest on Saturday 7 July at the
\nKalkfontein Primary School Hall at 10:00. Her body will be cremated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On Wednesday a group of young women in Sarepta held a march
\nin protest of the murder of Matthysen. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Rushade Fortuin (21) told TygerBurger she was so moved by the
\nstory as it was so close to home. \u201cWe weren\u2019t personal friends, but knowing
\nthat she was betrayed this way was wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The march started at Sarepta\u2019s sports grounds and ended at
\nMatthysen\u2019s home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
