Franchesca Walker, ward 26 councillor, says the successful
\noperation held in Parow on Friday 31 August was a collective partnership
\nbetween the various stakeholders. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Stakeholders including Parow police, Metro
\nPolice, neighbourhood watches, Law Enforcement, Community Policing Forum (CPF),
\nVoortrekker Road Corridor Improvement District (VRCID) and traffic officers
\nwere deployed to execute the operation in Parow on Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Walker initiated this collective operation to combat crime
\nafter various complaints from residents of Parow, Parow Valley and the broader
\nward about safety concerns. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
These include issues of violence, criminal
\nactivity, robberies at the train station and in the CBD, house break-ins and
\ndrug-related issues identified through extensive investigation<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Walker says various meetings over the past few months held
\nwith stakeholders including the CPF, Specialised Investigation Unit (SIU),
\nImmigration, the Traffic Department, Subcouncil, the Problem Buildings Unit,
\nCity of Cape Town line departments like the Solid Waste Department, the
\nVulnerable People Unit and Social Development led to the operation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Captain Williams, spokesperson for Parow police, says they
\ncalled it \u2018Operation Squeeze\u2019 because they want to push out the criminal
\nelements in the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Williams says roughly 50 people were involved in the
\noperation and were situated at hotspot areas which included the Parow train
\nstation, Station Road, Parow Valley station, Hungry Lion and the post office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to Williams, people come from Elsies River,
\nRavensmead, Uitsig and Delft and move into Parow and engage in criminal
\nactivities. Fekile Dyantyi, head of Visible Policing at Parow Police Station,
\nsays there were a few arrests in the early hours of the morning. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThere were
\ntwo vehicles for the K9 Unit to sniff some of the premises.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Dyantyi told TygerBurger it is important for them to do
\nthese operations to monitor the movement in the area when it\u2019s month-end and
\nSassa beneficiaries collect their money, and to monitor the traders as
\nrobberies are prone to occur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
During the raid that started at 05:00, after officers
\nfollowed up on information, members of the City\u2019s Metro Police, the Parow
\npolice, neighbourhood watches and CPF seized more than R100\u2009000 in drugs during
\na raid on a Parow building.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The drugs included 30 grams of rock cocaine, 290 grams of
\ntik, 62.5 Mandrax tablets, five parcels of dagga and five bankies of dagga.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This was the third bust in August where drugs were
\nconfiscated at the old Home Affairs building in King Edward Street. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The drugs
\nwere booked in at Parow Police Station as found abandoned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The other two raids occurred earlier on Tuesday 7 August
\nwhen officers searched the premises with K9s and found four Mandrax tablets,
\nthree bankies containing tik and 19 dagga cigarettes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On Wednesday 8 August, officers searched the premises again
\nwith the K9s and found 11 packets of tik, eight Mandrax tablets, three half
\nMandrax tablets and one quarter tablet. All the drugs were booked in at Parow
\nPolice Station as found abandoned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Councillor Walker says more operations like this will take
\nplace in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe will take action to restore public safety and to restore
\nthe trust of Parow residents.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
