Rumours of a syndicate watching children on GoPro cameras in
\nDurbanville spread like wildfire on Monday 10 September after a mother spotted
\nsomeone putting up such a camera on a pole.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to the rumour distributed in Whatsapp groups, a
\nGoPro camera was found on a pole outside Durbanville Primary School. The mother
\nthen shortly after spotted a \u201csuspicious\u201d man where he was busy attaching a
\nGoPro camera to a pole at the Durbanville Children\u2019s Home. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
She alerted the staff at the children\u2019s home and the camera
\nwas taken off. Parents, grandparents, caretakers and teachers were all warned
\nin a Whatsapp message to be on high alert.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe syndicates are watching our children before they steal
\nthe poor little ones (\u2018lyfies\u2019). It is happening here under our noses\u2026\u201d, the
\nmessage reads. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to Rudolf Bezuidenhout, manager of the Durbanville
\nChildren\u2019s Home, it is true that a GoPro camera was found attached to a pole in
\nfront of the home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
However, it was installed on the pole \u2013 and on a pole at
\nDurbanville Primary \u2013 as part of traffic assessesment for a development
\napplication, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe immediately had it removed when it came under our
\nattention, not knowing why it was there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe owner of the camera came to the children\u2019s home the
\nnext day (Tuesday) to get his camera back. I explained to him that it is not
\nallowed for our children to be photographed or for videos to be taken of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cHe was quite agitated that we had taken his camera off the
\npole, but he did not even ask our permission [to install it],\u201d Bezuidenhout
\nsaid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIs this even legal to just erect a camera anywhere? The
\nparents were rightfully upset. In these times where child theft is rife, one
\ncannot just put a camera somewhere without upsetting people,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Bezuidenhout was notified by Carin Viljoen, Subcouncil 7
\nmanager, that the cameras were put up as part of the assessment of the traffic
