On Tuesday 4 September, Elsies River High School received a
\nstate-of-the-art science lab donation from the University of the Western Cape
\n(UWC), Western Cape Education Department and non-profit organisation Garden
\nCities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This is part of UWC\u2019s ongoing commitment to increase the
\nnumber of students who go on to study towards science-related courses
\npost-matric.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Elsies River High School was the 62nd school to receive a
\nnewly built science lab in the province since the project was started back in
\n2011.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Science teacher at the school, Johardien Gordon, says he is
\nexcited about the lab.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAs a Science teacher, this is a big boom for the school; it
\nallows us to bring the reality, the functionality and practicality of science
\nto our learners. The lab is laid out in such a way that it is easy for learners
\nto do experiments,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe do have an array of equipment in the lab and now we have
\nthe capacity to do most of the experiments that we would not otherwise be able
\nto do,\u201d he adds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The school has about 120 Science learners between Grade 10
\nand Grade 12.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
UWC Registrar, Nita Lawton-Misra, says community engagement
\nis one of the three pillars by which they stand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cUWC is involved in many community projects, and we do not
\nsee these projects as just events, but as processes. We get involved from the
\nbeginning and we continue being part of the project until the end to make sure
\nthat the value of our intervention is not a once-off-feel-good kind of emotion
\nbut it continues to uplift communities and form relationships.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Myrtle February from Garden Cities says they have always
\nbeen involved in education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAs our Corporate Social Investment arm, we give money for
\neducation to build libraries and school halls, among others. [So] we use some
\nof our profits to build these premises,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
February also says that, as the organisation will be turning
\n100 years old next year, they will be opening their 100th school hall they have
\nbuilt in the province.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Leslie Brydan, principal of the school, says they are
\nconfident that the lab will be used to its full capacity to fulfil its purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAfter 44 years in the school, I will be retiring at the end
\nof the year, [so] this is something nice to leave behind.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe are gratified in knowing that the optimal use of the
\nfacility will have an impact on our learners as their passion for science
\nkindles and we believe the centre will be the match and will ignite the fire of
\npositive change in our community and that lives change for the better.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
