Residents of Leonsdale in Elsies River are calling for an
\nend to smash-and-grabs in the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
They stood in solidarity with Bishop Lavis peaceful
\nprotesters as they held their own picket on Wednesday 12 September.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Their aim was also to highlight the spate of smash-and-grabs
\noften occurring in Fransie van Zyl Road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Residents of the area gathered at the corner of Norwood and
\nFransie van Zyl roads to urge motorists to be on the alert.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Andy Cloete, who is the sector chairperson of sector 3 in
\nElsies River, told TygerBurger that Norwood Road is \u201cone of the biggest
\nhotspots for smash-and-grabs\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He said the picket was also in solidarity with calls to put
\nan end to gang violence in Bishop Lavis and surrounds. \u201cIn our area, about 50
\npeople died as a result of gang violence and about 100 people were shot and
\nwounded. A two-year-old baby was shot in the foot recently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe want to make everyone aware that we have now had enough.
\nSome people are turning a blind eye to what is actually happening in our
\ncommunity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Cloete said there are reports of smash-and-grabs almost
\nevery day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Yvonne Swartz, a resident of Leonsdale, said she is tired of
\nparents who continue to cover up for their children when they do wrong, such as
\nshootings or smash-and-grabs. \u201cWe approach the parents of the suspects to tell
\nthem to speak to their children, but they don\u2019t do anything.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Constance Snyders said she is one of the few people who
\nalways stand on the corner of Norwood Road to alert people. \u201cI always let the
\nmotorists know that this is a hotspot area. We\u2019ve been threatened by the
\ncommunity already because of what we\u2019re doing, but we will not give up.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Elsies River police recently indicated that other hotspot
\nsmash-and-grab areas include Viking Road between Halt and Fransie van Zyl
\nroads, and the intersections of Owen Road and 35th Avenue, Owen Road and
\nValhalla Avenue as well as Norwood and Viking roads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Police have offered the following safety tips to avoid
\nsmash-and-grabs:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u2013 Be on the alert as suspects tend to target those who are
\ndistracted,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u2013 Lock all valuables in the boot of your car,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u2013 Be vigilant of people loitering at intersections,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u2013 Keep car doors locked and windows closed at busy
\nintersections,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u2013 When driving at night, try driving in the middle lane as
\nsuspects tend to hide in the bushes or grass next to the side lane,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u2013 If you see an obstacle in the road, do not get out of your
\ncar to move it,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u2013 Fit your window with protective smash-and-grab film, and<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u2013 Carry pepper spray or a whistle to protect yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
