The DA\u2019s shadow minister for police, Zakhele Mbhele,
\nconducted an oversight visit to Delft Police Station following the release of
\nthe crime statistics two weeks ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Across the 30 worst precincts, crime levels in Delft saw the
\nbiggest jump in reported crimes with an increase of 19%, and a figure of 6380
\n(\u201cDelft crime among the worst\u201d, 9\/2018).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The station has been listed fifth among the top 30 stations
\nfor murder in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to Mbhele, the station commander, Brigadier
\nPhindiwe Ntungele, admitted that the understaffed and under-resourced police
\nstation is struggling to effectively fight crime in the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe national police to resident ratio stands at 1:383.
\nHowever, Delft has 1 police officer per 642 residents, despite the community
\nbeing besieged by gang-related violent crimes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe failing ANC government is solely to blame for the
\npolicing challenges in Delft. Whilst the ANC continues to deliberately use
\npolice resources in the Western Cape as a political tool, the City of Cape Town
\nand the Western Cape Provincial Government have gone above and beyond to keep
\nlocal communities safe \u2013 regardless of their limited mandate,\u201d said Mbhele
\nafter the visit. He said that police need proper equipment, training and
\nadequate staff to protect the community. \u201cOur communities have become war-zones
\nand we need a professional police service which serves and protects all South
\nAfricans, not just the elites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cRight now, however, while our most vulnerable communities
\nsuffer daily, it is necessary for the army to be deployed to these communities
\nso that our people can feel safe in their homes and on the streets.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
