A strong petroleum smell greeted Parklands and Table View residents
\non Thursday morning last week \u2013 the smell was clearly discernible as far as
\nParklands Main Road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As in many previous such incidents, residents wasted very
\nlittle time trying to figure out the cause of the smell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
One resident raised her concerns on the Table View
\nNeighbours New Facebook page, saying: \u201cThis morning around 05:00 and for a few
\nhours, there was a terrible petroleum smell. I noticed again this evening it is
\nback, so much so that my nose is burning inside. I am not new to the area, I
\nhave been here since 1991\u2009\u2026\u2009is there some problem going on at the refinery?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
One resident said they saw big clouds of black smoke coming
\nfrom the refinery early that morning, while another said the smell was \u201creally
\npungent\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThere was a weird gassy smell outside this morning around
\n01:30\u201d, another resident wrote. Another responded, saying: \u201cYes it seems that
\nfunny things happen under the cover of darkness\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Earlier in the day, a user commented that there had been a
\nloss of electrical power to the refinery. This was confirmed by Chevron\u2019s
\npublic affairs advisor, Darren Rix.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He told TygerBurger that the Cape Town refinery can confirm
\nthat a total power supply outage to the refinery and surrounds was experienced
\non Thursday 4 October. The outage was as a result of the external power supply
\nbeing interrupted, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe refinery was safely shut down, which resulted in some
\nvisible emissions,\u201d Rix said. He said the refinery was currently in the process
\nof starting up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThis process may take several days and result in some
\nintermittent visible emissions and noise. We will do our best to mitigate these
\npotential impacts,\u201d he responded on Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
