Parow police have intensified visibility over weekends, from
\n05:00 on Fridays until 05:00 on Sundays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
After a joint operation between the South African Police
\nService (SAPS), Law Enforcement, the Voortrekker Road Corridor Improvement
\nDistrict (VRCID), neighbourhood watches and ward 26 councillor, Franchesca
\nWalker, last month, crime is still a factor in Parow. The aim of the operation
\nwas to stabilise and all forms of crime in the Parow CBD area. This involved
\nhigh visibility of police in and around the Parow train station, Parow Valley
\ntaxi rank and Voortrekker Road. Police also carried out search-and-seizures at
\ndrug houses to prevent drug activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to a Parow resident, the drugs and prostitution
\nhave worsened in the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI can\u2019t sleep anymore because of all the prostitution and
\ndrug addicts making a noise,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to the resident, only one patrol van from the
\npolice ussually comes to search them, but they became very aggressive towards
\nthe officers. She says often these people do not even stay in Parow, but they
\ncome and make their business there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Parow police spokesperson, Captain Kevin Williams, says
\nParow police are focusing on robbery, business robbery and theft out of motor
\nvehicles. Williams urges residents to adhere to the following safety tips to
\nprevent theft out of motor vehicles:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
-Remove all valuable items from vehicles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
-Do not lock your vehicle while walking away from the car,
\nbut while standing at the vehicle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
-Check if doors are properly locked\u2002before leaving the
\nvehicle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Williams says Parow has experienced a spike in commercial
\ncrime, especially fraud. He says consumers who buy cars or rent property via
\nthe internet need to be vigilant and residents are advised to do the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
-Do not to buy a car or rent property without checking the
\nseller\u2019s internet profile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
-Check if the business is registered with a legitimate bank
\naccount.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
-For safety, go to the bank of the seller and verify that
\nthe account has been operating for at least 18 months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
-Ask for proof of address and make contact with the seller
\nat the residence, not at a food court or other place of meeting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
-Preferably do not buy anything on the internet at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
-Do not deposit hard cash into the account of an unknown
\nperson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
-Rather buy a car from a reputable car dealer and rent
\nproperty from an estate or renting agent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Williams says assault, common assault and grievous bodily
\nharm (GBH) need to be addressed. \u201cWe cannot effectively enforce these crimes
\nbecause we only find out about it when victims lay criminal charges,\u201d says
\nWilliams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to Williams, alcohol and drug dependency is one of
\nthe main factors for violence and therefore drinking alcohol in moderation is
\nkey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
There has also been an increase in sexual crimes which
\nmainly occur indoors or at secluded places.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWomen are advised not to walk alone at night, don\u2019t go
\nanywhere with strangers, don\u2019t hitchhike alone at night, and don\u2019t accept
\nalcoholic beverages from strangers at a pub or at a party.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Williams says if you have been raped, do not wash yourself,
\nbut report the incident immediately at your nearest police station in order to
\nretrieve DNA samples.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
