Grade 7 learners at Kalkfontein Primary School got dressed
\nup to the nines for their prom on Thursday 25 October to celebrate the end of
\ntheir primary school careers at the Sarepta Civic Centre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The event has been marked as a historic moment for the
\nschool, as this was the very first time in the 12 years since opening its doors
\nthat the school hosted a farewell for its senior learners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
TygerBurger popped in on the day of the prom to see how the
\nlearners were celebrating their last few weeks of being primary school
\nlearners, and was greeted by the class of 2018 mingling excitedly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Assistant teacher and organiser of the event, Shane
\nCornelius, said the event serves as a culmination of months of hard work and
\nplanning. \u201cIt has been my dream for a long time to host something of this
\nnature for the school,\u201d said Cornelius. \u201cI am most looking forward to seeing
\nthe learners enjoy their time, and of course I love their facial expressions
\nwhen they enter the hall.\u201d Cornelius said he hoped the evening would serve as
\nsome sort of encouragement for the learners as they move forward to high
\nschool. \u201cI hope this will encourage them to work hard to eventually attain
\nmatric,\u201d he said. The night, dubbed \u201cA Night in Hollywood\u201d, saw each learner
\nbeing assigned to tables bearing the names of today\u2019s biggest celebrity
\nsensations, namely Beyonc\u00e9, Cardi B and Rihanna.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Head boy of the school, Amissi Mzaliwa, said he would enjoy
\nbeing able to hang out with his friends and listen to cool music. \u201cI want this
\nto be a night I will never forget and after which I can say, \u2018I had the best
\ntime\u2019,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Deputy principal of Kalkfontein Primary School, Theodore van
\nWyk, said the evening marks an opportunity for each learner to simply be
\nthemselves. \u201cWe want them to realise how precious they are and how much
\npotential they each have. We hope they make the best of all their opportunities
\ngoing forward. Our hope is also that they live their lives to the fullest
\nbeyond tonight,\u201d said Van Wyk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Principal Allan van Niekerk said the event was \u201chistory in
\nthe making\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThis group is really special. This year has been the first
\nyear in which we\u2019ve had such few discipline problems,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Van Niekerk further said the staff strive to make the school
\na safe haven for its learners. \u201cWe are striving to provide them with quality
\neducation, and to make the school a safe and comfortable space,\u201d he said. \u201cThey
\nhave all these opportunities we as the older generation never had. The sky is
\nthe limit for them.\u201d Furthermore, he thanked the staff for their efforts
\nthroughout the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI must thank the teachers who so diligently supported the
