Road users have applauded the City of Cape Town for the much-needed facelift of Koeberg Road, saying this road has been an eyesore for many years \u201cdue to poor maintenance, hawkers and vagrants\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The roadworks on the well-known road used daily by most Milnerton and surrounding motorists, is set to reopen at the end of April, pending unforeseen delays and inclement weather.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The City says they are currently busy with the resurfacing and milling of approximately 3,8 km of road surface along Koeberg Road. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The work commenced last month and include both the north and southbound carriageways between Racecourse Road and Blaauwberg Road. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The work is implemented from Monday to Saturday between 19:00 and 05:00 and forms part of routine maintenance. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Motorists say traffic during peak hours was not affected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWhen they first announced the roadworks, I thought of waking up early to avoid traffic congestion. But then I saw that the City workers only came at 19:00. This really helped,\u201d says Bradley Philander.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Another motorist says the road has been her normal work route for years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI know that road infrastructure gets damaged after a few years, but to properly maintain it is the key. Compliments to the City for finally opening their eyes,\u201d says Chantal Williams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The work includes the milling of selective existing surface and base failures up to a depth of 140 mm and replacing it with new bitumen treatment base and wearing course asphalt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The City\u2019s Mayco member for urban mobility Rob Quintas says they are working on an extremely busy section of Koeberg Road, which has experienced extensive surface and base failures due to the volume of heavy vehicle traffic it carries every day. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cGiven that this road serves residential, commercial and industrial commuters, we opted to do the work at night. In so doing, we maximise productivity and limit the impact on commuters, while providing a safer environment for both the workers and the road users,\u201d Quintas says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Approximately R9 million was invested on the necessary maintenance, which is crucial to prolong the longe\u00advity of Koeberg Road, the City says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cRegular road maintenance forms part of our annual planning as Cape Town\u2019s road network is one of the city\u2019s biggest assets keeping people, goods and services moving,\u201d Quintas says. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Traffic moving in both directions along this section of Koeberg Road is affected as work is ta\u00adking place on both carriageways; however, this is managed by having one lane open to traffic in each direction along the road while work is ongoing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe are almost done. I thank the motorists for their patience during this time. The last stretch is always the worst, but I appeal to residents and motorists to bear with us and to please reduce speed and exercise extra caution when moving around the construction site. Although work is happening at night, traffic flow may still be impacted and therefore I encourage motorists to consider alternative routes where possible,\u201d Quintas adds. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
