TygerBurger <\/em>reported last week how one couple, who works and studies from home was disconnected for more than two weeks. <\/p>\n\n\n\n This had an influence on their work, studies and entertainment which left them very frustrated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Ewald van der Westhuizen, coastal and regional director for Vumatel, says they share the frustrations of residents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cSince the beginning of May our network has been sabotaged on a weekly basis in Blue Downs, through individuals who gain access to our manholes and cut-off the fibre cables. Their intention for doing so is unknown to us. <\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThe damage to the network is severe and completely new cables need to be implemented, which is a timeous process and results in extended downtime to the residents of Blue Downs,\u201d says Van der Westhuizen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He says not only does this damage impact them, but more importantly impacts the residents of Blue Downs who are unable to work, study and enjoy their entertainment time at their homes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cUnfortunately, as soon as the cables are fixed and or we are busy fixing the damage these individuals go out again and cut off more of our cables. We have opened cases of theft and vandalism at the Mfuleni Police Station and urge any residents who potentially have any information to please report it to the police to assist in this case. <\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWe also urge residents who see people accessing manholes to only be our technicians who will have proper identification on them. Access to fibre truly transforms peoples lives and communities and it is sad that there are certain individuals who make it their mission to destroy this,\u201d says Van der Westhuizen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
